In the last two decades, the seahorse population has decreased by 90% in Ria Formosa.

Seahorses most of the times mate with the same partner during the reproductive cycle, which begins with the weaving of the tails and a small “dance”. While mating, the female transfers the eggs to the male, who fertilizes them in their brood pouch for 28 days, after which they release several dozen small juveniles.
There are countless characteristics that make this fish unique. Unlike the vast majority of fishes, seahorses swim vertically and do not have scales or tail fins. They can even change color!
They live discreetly among sponges and algae and at dusk they form small groups that swim slowly.

Their tail is one of their most prominent and useful features, as it allows them to cling to underwater plants while they feed. Using their tails they cling to corals, algae or plants and manage to avoid getting carried away by the force of the currents.
Big-bellied seahorses can reach large dimensions, up to 35 centimeters.
