Modern reality cannot be compared to the 1900's : the reduction of the wild rabbit species, the iberian lynx’s main prey, as well as the habitat deterioration almost led this charismatic feline to extinction. Fortunately, due to conservation efforts and captive breeding, the lynx now roams around Portugal, in the Guadiana Valley, and across much of southern Spain.

Did you know?
At the beginning of the 20th century, the distribution of this species was wide: Serra da Estrela, Alcácer do Sal, Évora and Odemira. Later, the existence of these felines was limited to two areas of Andalusia. Currently, Iberian lynx populations are located not only in Spain, but also in Portugal.
Its tail is shorter than most felines’, giving them the appearance of a large cat, measuring between 85 and 110 centimeters, also it has a yellowish-brown body, covered in spots.

It is a solitary animal and it has characteristics that differentiate it from the others: the black hairs that come out of the ends of its ears and the black and white “beards”, which grow as the animal ages, give it a unique and distinct appearance.
According to the ICNF, in 2017 it was estimated that there were only about 1111 Iberian lynxes in Portugal and Spain.
