You're more likely to be struck by lightning than to be bitten by a shark. Sharks do not hunt for fun or sport, but only to feed themselves. Considering their unfair reputation as human killers, we have to remember how important they are.
Many species of sharks are at the top of the ecological pyramid and when they are completely eliminated, their prey will grow without limits and the ecosystem will become unbalanced, which can potentially create dead zones in the ocean.

By 2020, 77% of oceanic sharks and rays were severely threatened to the point of extinction. Some of these species, such as the Whitetip Shark, are now considered critically endangered.
The profound effects of depleting these predatory species are becoming apparent. For example, the decline of large apex predators such as sharks and tunas can result in significant functional changes to oceanic food webs.
