Polar bears are at the top of the food chain and play a very important role in maintaining marine life. Because they spend most of their lives on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean depending on the ocean for their food and habitat, polar bears are the only bear species to be considered marine mammals. They can swim long distances for a long period of time to move from one piece of ice to another. Their large paws are especially adapted for swimming. They use them to paddle with their front paws, while holding their hind legs flat, like a rudder.

Polar bears have such a remarkable sense of smell that they can detect a seal swimming in water, under a meter of packed snow, up to a kilometer away.
There are approximately 26,000 wild polar bears; by 2050, the number of polar bears could decrease by 30% due to the rapid loss of sea ice.
