The Iberian wolf is a large mammal, currently the largest wild canid. It is mainly threatened by habitat destruction and fragmentation, which lead to food shortages and direct human persecution. Help us protect this species. Adopt a wolf and support our work!

This Iberian subspecies is regionally classified as "endangered" in Portugal, so it is considered a priority conservation species.

ADOPT AN IBERIAN WOLF, SUPPORT OUR WORK

Animal adoptions give our work a great boost. Your symbolic adoption supports all our ANP|WWF projects. Along with our partners, we are promoting awareness about the urgent need to co-exist with wildlife by maintaining a precious and essential balance. Your support is essential concerning all the active projects - Wildlife, Oceans and Fisheries, Water, Forests, Food and Climate - so that they can be long-term and so that we can create new front-end interventions for the conservation of Nature!

How does it work?

Did you know?

In Portuguese territory, iberian wolf’s disappearance was more noticeable after 1940, but it was in the 1970s that the situation of the species declined drastically. Today it occupies only 20% of the original distribution area, with two main population centers in Portugal, separated by the Douro River. To the north it exists in the districts of Bragança, Vila Real, Porto, Viana do Castelo and Braga and to the south it inhabits the districts of Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda.

The mating season takes place between March-April, when the female's reproductive period takes place (5-7 days/year). Females and young remain in the den from birth until the end of the nursing period, approximately 7-9 weeks. The cubs are cared for by both the parents and the rest of the pack.

Learn more about the Iberian Wolf

It lives in packs, usually in family groups with a very well-defined hierarchy, and has mainly diurnal habits. However, when it lives in close proximity to humans, it becomes nocturnal.

The Iberian wolf is, among the wolf subspecies, the one with the smallest dimensions and weight (height at withers - 70 cm; weight - 25 to 40 kg). The wolf’s winter coat has darker tones in comparison to the summer coat.
